Find a deck of cards, and get ready to practice your addition and subtraction. Battle for points by flipping over cards and finding their differences. Add up your total earnings to see who wins! This game is great for both home and the classroom. Children can play it independently or with an adult.

Skill:

What You Need:

  • One deck of cards
  • Pencil and paper for each player/team (to keep score)

What You Do:

  1. This game is for two players or teams. Decide who is on team Red and who is on team Black.
  2. Shuffle the deck of cards and place it face down.
  3. Aces will count as one, faces cards count as 10, and all other cards equal their face value.
  4. Each team takes one card and flips it face up. If the color of the cards is red, the red team gets the difference of the value on the cards. If the color of the cards is black, the black team gets the difference. If there is one red and one black card, both teams get the difference. For example, if a two of hearts and a ten of spades are turned over, both teams get 8 points, the difference of these cards.
  5. Each team should keep track of their own score, thereby practicing their addition as well.
  6. Play continues until the pack is depleted. The team with the most points wins.

Variations:

  • Change the scoring rules so that teams receive the sum of the cards.
  • Change the scoring rules so that teams receive the product of the cards.
  • For younger players, adjust the rules so that only one point is earned each round. Record scores with tallies.
  • Play until one team reaches a certain number of points (e.g. 100).

Sometimes, learning to count money can be a challenging task. Keeping track of all of the different kinds of coins and their values can be difficult.

What You Need:

  • Two players
  • Play or real coins (approximately 50 pennies, 10 nickels, four dimes, and two quarters)
  • Dice
  • Paper
  • Pencil

What to Do:

1. Take turns rolling the die. Each player rolls the die once per turn and each dot on the die equals one cent.
2. For a each turn, the player will draw and record the amount of the roll on the sheet of paper next to his or her name, labeling the turn each time.
3. Each time you add more cents when you roll the die, draw and record the new amount in the next few lines on the paper, numbering it accordingly.
4. On any given turn, circle the coins that you can trade for a larger coin if you're able. For example, if you have 7 cents, you may trade in five of those cents for one nickel; 10 cents for a dime, etc.
5. Draw and record what the trade looks like in the next few lines below.
6. The first person who reaches 25 cents and can trade in their coins for a quarter is the winner.
Variations: As your second grader becomes more confident and skilled with counting coins, you may want to make this activity more challenging by changing it to “Ways to Make $.50 or $1.00”
